We love the casual ambiance of the Rose and Thistle, the friendly, helpful staff and the authentic food. The menu has a good variety, is slightly unusual and the food is good quality. If we can we eat in the garden surrounded by the roses and in the sun. The outside tables are getting a bit wobbly and now need a refresh I’m afraid. At our last visit my husband had his favourite steak and kidney pie and I had pork loin with leeks and cream sauce - lovely but it needed a bit more seasoning in my view. We’d recommend the rose and thistle. We will be back

We chose the Rose and Thistle as a fairly random venue when a booking that we made in Salisbury was cancelled by the pub there. We are glad we did! It was a lovely experience. A proper country pub, with excellent staff and very good food. What more could you want? Shame we live some way away or we would be back regularly. Thanks R&T staff: keep up the good work.

I have always loved the Rose and Thistle, affectionately known as the RAT. I was treated to lunch on Tuesday so suggested we went to the Rose and Thistle. I only wanted a light lunch so ordered the crab bruschetta from the starter menu priced at £10.95. Quite pricey so I was expecting a reasonable portion, however there was just one small bruschetta with about a tablespoon of crab meat on the top - devoured in 2 mouthfuls. Not good value, I was too embarrassed to complain as I was not paying. If the waitress had informed me that there were more lunch options on the back of the menu I could have had a crab sandwich for the same price, far more satisfying!

I am sorry to say that all three of our party were very disappointed with our meals.
I would like to point out that the service was excellent and we have no complaints in that area
The food was advertised as becoming of an ‘even better standard’ with a new chef and that is why we took as advantage of the 3 for 30 offer.
It was. However very poor value.
The terrine was tasty but slightly dry and came with very little sauce, chutney or bread to accompany it.
The soufflé was very nice but the £2.50 surcharge seemed gratuitous.
The hake was over cooked and the skin too highly seasoned, the cauliflower was not roasted fully and remained rather limp. The veloute was thick in places and very runny in others. The cauliflower cous cous was acidic, cold and unpleasant to eat with the rest of the dish
The onglet was an even greater disappointment as it was incredibly tough, chewy and with little flavour. The two people in our party who had the onglet said that they couldn’t remember having a worse piece of meat. The silver skin was still on the steak and so it tightened up and was very difficult to remove. We recognise that this is a firmer cut of meat, however this was not our experience as it was more than firm, being unpleasant and almost impossible to chew.
The spinach was well cooked and enjoyable
The sweetcorn fritters were doughy and undercooked
The bill came to £143 which was astronomical for the over all quality of every element of the meal.
The person who served us kindly took 15% off the bill but we believe that £122 for what we received was still excessive and the experience has dented our confidence in the restaurant more widely

Superb village pub with a lovely garden. The host was really friendly and welcoming and the service brilliant. We enjoyed a long, lazy lunch but there was nothing tired about the food. It was delicious and freshly cooked. If you’re visiting Martin Down nature reserve and need to refuel, make sure you swing by - it’s lovely.

Two things-The prices are VERY fair for a meal of this quality in a building of such beauty.
We went to a place near Brockenhurst recently, (named after an animal that loves acorns in the Autumn); we enjoyed it, the bill was twice as much and the food half as good. And they only had Flacks in bottles. Thank you.

Booked lunch on a Saturday and this was our first visit to this friendly pub. What a surprise we had, staff very friendly and helpful and the atmosphere very cosy.
The food was divine with unusual and skilful twists. Very tasty and very well executed, we will definitely return. Ham hock terrine was the best ever had anywhere and the chicken and pistachio croquettes were delicious. Duck breast with beetroot in raspberry jus, steak and kidney suet pudding and gnocchi mains also fabulous. We recommend this place to anyone.

We have been coming to your pub for years. This time the food wasn't so good. My wife's burger was extremely dry. My haddock was fine but the chips for both of us weren't very nice and are obviously bought in. Bit surprised also that whilst you had sugar for coffee, you had no sweeteners. So this time not a good experience I'm afraid.

A great find. We were well received and looked after during the whole visit. The menu was varied and interesting. The 2 meals were delicious. We had booked for an inside table but as the weather was good, took advantage of the delightful garden. Will definitely go again.

We found the room quite cold. Although the fire was alight it wasn’t sending out much heat, and there were no other diners that Saturday lunchtime , so it wasn’t as comfortable an experience as it could have been.
On the plus side we enjoyed the food and the staff were very attentive.
